Iteris is looking for a Sr. Arterial Operations Engineer manages the daily operational activities of the arterial program, in accordance with the requirements of MUTCD, TEM, District 7 RTMC SOP, protocols, policies and all applicable standards and policies, and is responsible for the overall operations and functionality of the arterial program. The Sr. Arterial Operations Engineer will be required to make decisions pertaining to the arterial operations requiring a high degree of experience and judgment and must facilitate the smooth and balanced arterial operation at the RTMC. This Engineer will be required to provide services in timing plan development/refinement following FDOT protocols and practices, including special event timing plans to be implemented as part of the arterial program and review signal operations in arterial control sections. The ideal candidate may work out of the RTMC building or at another location (to be determined).
What you will be doing:
Actively monitor the system and other arterial ITS infrastructure, analyze traffic data and recommend/perform actions to improve arterial traffic operations
Provide recommendations to develop, update, and maintain signal timing information
Implement or provide guidance to Arterials Operators to implement real-time signal operation changes from the RTMC using Signal Central Systems
Provide supervision and directions for signal operational modifications
Conduct field reviews when it is necessary to evaluate traffic operation issues as well as to resolve signal operation issues
Ensure signal operation modifications are signed and sealed and properly documented in accordance with FDOT District 7 policies and guidelines
Implement, monitor, and fine tune diversion/evacuation route timings when roadway closures or evacuation orders occur on the freeways or arterials
Monitor potential off-ramp traffic backups and implement flush timing patterns to clear the ramps before spilling over to the freeway mainline
Prepare system performance reports
Track and respond to system alarms to ensure system downtime is minimal
Coordinate with the freeway operations staff in managing congestion on arterials resulting from expressway incidents and special events
Coordinate with stakeholders in managing congestion on arterials resulting from special events
Ensure traffic performance and monitoring dashboards are kept up to date and enhancements to the dashboards are made when opportunities for improvement are identified, new technologies are available, or at the direction of FDOT in coordination with the IT Staff
Ensure ATSPM performance monitoring tools are developed, deployed, configured correctly, and maintained properly in coordination with IT Staff
Ensure Arterials Operators are effectively using ATSPM tools to improve efficiency of arterial operations
Routinely monitor live traffic applications, dashboards, and ATMS applications to ensure operators are proactively identifying potential and ongoing traffic/signal operation issues and coordinating signal operational changes quickly to minimize the impact to traffic movement. QA/QC measures shall be set in place to ensure fast identification of traffic issues and proactive implementation of signal operational changes. SOPs shall be modified immediately if and when opportunities are identified to improve the efficiency of RTMC operation
Ensure all traffic controlling and monitoring applications and devices are functioning as intended and coordinate with IT Staff, Maintaining Agency staff, and/or ITS Maintenance Contractor to resolve issues
Ensure all signalized intersections are configured correctly in the Detection Failure Monitoring and Alerting Application (Watchdog) and coordinate with IT Staff in resolving issues with the Application. if and when this application is developed and installed
Support CAV Technology implementation, monitor/operate CAV-related applications and devices, and coordinate with IT Staff, Maintaining Agency staff and/or ITS Maintenance Contractor to resolve CAV system issues
Assist FDOT signal timing consultants, FDOT staff, or local agency staff with signal/system retiming efforts
Assist FDOT signal timing consultants, FDOT staff, or local agency staff in reporting results and effects of signal retiming efforts
Prepare monthly reports on the performance of the signal system based on predefined measures of effectiveness and other arterial reports
Performance monitoring, cost/benefit reporting, and benchmarking of the arterial network
Participate in progress meetings and other meetings as requested by FDOT
Lead weekly major arterial incident evaluations, develop and track action items resulting from these evaluations
Participate in Traffic Incident Management (TIM) meetings and ensure appropriate interagency coordination
What you need to be successful in this role:
Bachelor’s from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in an engineering discipline or any other STEM discipline
State of Florida Professional Engineering license
Minimum five (5) years of experience with traffic signal operation, signal retiming, and traffic signal central software systems
Knowledge and understanding of traffic signal systems, traffic controller operation, ITS and traffic engineering principles
Knowledge of traffic signal analysis programs, such as SYNCHRO, HCS, etc.
Good leadership and interpersonal skills
Good communication skills and ability to work as a team member
Ability to make independent decisions on a routine basis
Ability to work alternate work schedules
Ability to write technical reports and correspondence
Ability to coordinate real-time activities and priorities
Iteris anticipates paying a base salary between $99,000 and $115,000 for this role. Actual pay offered may be below or above these amounts, depending on the individual’s job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
